Huge news for AG-WaMED! Our Italian Living Lab in Val D’Orcia is now listed within the Atlas of Water-oriented Living Labs of Water4All. The area is mainly characterized by non-irrigated agriculture but, in the last decades, farmers resorted to emergency irrigation during summer. Only few direct abstraction points from Orcia river are present in the area while groundwater is mainly used for geothermal purposes. Therefore, a fundamental reserve of water is represented by multiple small agricultural reservoirs spread in the area.
This is an amazing achievement that sets the base for a longer-term activity plan with our stakeholders. Only four other Living Labs in Italy are listed in the Atlas.
Elena Bresci, Project Coordinator of AG-WaMED and Coordinator of the Living Lab, declares: “Managing water resources in a changing climate requires adaptive strategies also in Italy. Water Harvesting and Small Agricultural Reservoirs represent a sustainable solution, but coordination and enabling policies are necessary“.
