The Campo de Cartagena Irrigation District (CRCC) is located in the Campo de Cartagena Region, which has one of the most profitable irrigated farms at the regional and national level. The climate is semi-arid Mediterranean, with an average annual rainfall of 300 mm, and an average annual temperature of 18 ºC. This irrigation district was established in 1952. It currently comprises an irrigable area of 42,435 ha with 9,699 community members, extending through several municipalities in the provinces of Murcia and Alicante. It is one of the largest and most engineered irrigation districts in Europe. Although water demand is estimated from 180 and 200 hm3/yr, the Campo de Cartagena Irrigation District only receives an average of 4.2 hm3/yr of regulated resources from the Segura Basin. The rest of the resources come from non-conventional sources. Water transfer from Tajo-Segura Aqueduct averages 122 hm3/yr, but it is highly irregular, and the annual amount has been steadily decreasing.
Non conventional water technologies in place | Irrigation water resources are complemented with effluent from wastewater treatment plants (11.7 hm3/yr) and the Mojón desalination plant (2.2 hm3/yr), which treats brackish water draining from the irrigation zone. Only in 1998 and 1999 all the provisions established from the head of the Tagus were transferred, so the usual operating situation is that of a permanent deficit of resources with a great irregularity in the Tajo-Segura Transfer. There have been years that the situation has been very critical, for example in 1995 the Irrigation Community was only able to distribute 18 hm3. |
